In Levi, where you stay shapes your days more than you might expect. It decides whether you click into your skis at the front door or walk through the village first, and whether dinner means a restaurant table or a quiet evening in your own kitchen. This guide compares two quite different settings: Utsuvaara and the area around Levi village centre.
One thing to keep in mind from the start: not every place to stay in Utsuvaara is ski-in/ski-out, and not every “central” apartment is equally close to the services. Always check the exact location and distances of the place you’re looking at.

Who is Utsuvaara for?
Utsuvaara suits holidays built around nature, quiet and time outdoors. Evenings are calm, and with fewer lights around, the stars and the northern lights stand out better.
For skiers, a ski-in/ski-out location is Utsuvaara’s big advantage. No waiting for a bus or carrying skis in the morning, and you can come back to your own kitchen for lunch. At our Utsuvaara Retreat the slope starts about 10 metres from the door, the nearest lift is about 100 m away and the cross-country trail leaves from the back yard. On clear nights you can watch the auroras from your own terrace. Our guide to a ski holiday in Utsuvaara goes into the skiing side in more detail.
The trade-off is distance. Utsuvaara Retreat is about 8 km from Levi village – around ten minutes by car. The nearest restaurant is about 1 km away, but for the supermarket and the village restaurants you’ll need a ride. If you picture dinner in the village every night, plan the transfers in advance.
Who is the village centre for?
Staying near the centre suits travellers who like to go everywhere on foot and decide the day’s plans as they go. Shops, restaurants and lifts are a walk away, so you don’t have to plan the day around rides. It’s often the easiest choice if you fly in without a car; our guide to Levi without a car covers that in detail.
The trade-off is a busier setting. Right in the heart of the village, evenings can be lively, so if you also want quiet, look at places on the edge of the centre.
Sointuilevi Central is one example: a log-built holiday apartment in Nuottirakka, about 500 m from restaurants and shops and about 700 m from the front-slope lifts. It sits on the forest side, so you have both the village and the stillness close at hand.
Families, ski groups and couples
Families
With young children, short transfers and a calm base matter a lot. Think about where the children will spend their days: if ski school or other activities are in the village, staying near the centre saves trips. If the family already skis independently, being close to a slope may matter more. Just don’t assume that the slope nearest to your accommodation is a good one for beginners. More tips in our guide to staying in Levi with children.
Ski groups
If the slopes are the point of the trip, ski-in/ski-out saves time every single day. Check which slopes and lifts will be open during your stay, though – especially at the very start and end of the season. For larger groups, space decides too: Utsuvaara Retreat has beds for eight, and Sointuilevi Central sleeps up to six.
Couples
Both work well for couples; it comes down to the rhythm you want. Utsuvaara is lovely for a slow holiday of sauna evenings and waiting for the auroras. Near the centre, you can go out for dinner and walk home afterwards.
How the season changes the choice
Ski season in Levi typically starts in mid-October and runs into early May, depending on the snow. Being close to a slope pays off most in midwinter. At the start and end of the season not every slope and lift is necessarily open, so check the current slope status on Levi’s official site (levi.fi).
Aurora season usually runs from early September to early April. A dark setting helps, but cloud cover often matters more than location.
In summer and the autumn colour season, the lifts matter less. Your choice then depends more on hiking spots, getting around, and whether you’d rather be close to the village or to nature.
Which of our homes?
We host two holiday homes that represent exactly these two ways of staying in Levi. Choose Utsuvaara Retreat for slopes at the door, the quiet of the fell and room for up to eight. Choose Sointuilevi Central to walk to the village and the lifts – it sleeps up to six and has a private sauna and a fireplace.
